I was diagnosed and treated for Hydrocephalus in November of last year. The first few months after shunt placement surgury was kind of rough but it seems like things are getting a little better for me. EXCEPT-------- My wife and I took our 13 year old son in to the family doctor last week because he says he's been having alot of headaches. They sent him in for a
Cat scan and told us there were some abnormalities. They told us that it looks like he also has Hydrocephalus. We have to go to Indianapolis to Riley's Children Hospital next week to have him further tested and to be honest- I am scarred to death.

Brian,

I think the comments your wife's doctor gave were just another example of the ignorance most people have towards hydrocephalus. I don't think that is true at all. Some people should just keep their mouths shut! I have found that most doctors who are not neurosurgeons know less than we do about it. Sometimes I think we even know more than the neurosurgeons! (Don't tell them I said that!)

My doctor said something today that has really bothered me. I was diagnosed and treated for hydro in November of last year.(Shunt Placement)
My wife went in a checkup at our family doctor today and he asked her if she had our assests safegaurded in case something happens to me in the future. ( The next ten years ) I am 41 years old and I hope I have a few more years than that. None of my doctors or surgeons has ever said anything like this to me. I was just wondering if anyone else has been asked this by their doctors.

Its been a long time since I visited
My husband has had a few more shunt surgeries
He just came home last week from having all catheters changed and a new codman inserted
He was getting worse
Apparently the scan shows the ventricular catheter has migrated out of the ventricle..Has anyone ever heard of this
The surgeon is on holidays so the covering physician is not being very helpful...as yet
Says if the symptoms worsen go to emerg
I will do that
But I wonder if the tube migrates out can it come back in spontaneously

Hi, my daughter Dakota will be 3 years old soon. She had a VP shunt placed when she was 4 days old. She was born with spina bifida. So far she has done well with everything and no major signs of shunt problems. Over the past month I have started to get concerned about her. She has always had headaches occasionally, but over the last 2 weeks she has had one almost every day, and she had a CT done because she fell and hit her head and the report said her left ventricle was mildly dilated. Does anyone think she may have a shunt problem? Please let me know if you have had similar problems.

I'm Back!! My son had is shunt placed about 6 months ago. He is doing well. He will be 8 months old in 5 days. Aside from the complications due to him being pre-mature, everything is going well. We have the occasional fever that scares the crap out of us, but all-in-all we've reached a level of understanding and are quite pleased. I want to thank all of those that prayed for us and gave us words of encouragement, it helped alot.

Thanks
